Seychelles joins the United Nations. (21. September 1976)

Prince Norodom Sihanouk resigns as leader of Cambodia and is placed under house arrest. (4. April 1976)

British Prime Minister Harold Wilson resigns, citing personal reasons. (16. March 1976)

Soweto uprising: a non-violent march by 15,000 students in Soweto, South Africa turns into days of rioting when police open fire on the crowd. (16. June 1976)

In Argentina, the armed forces overthrow the constitutional government of President Isabel PerĂ³n and start a 7-year dictatorial period self-styled the National Reorganization Process. Since 2006, a public holiday known as Day of Remembrance for Truth and Justice is held on this day. (24. March 1976)
