After an extended siege, forces led by Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés capture Tlatoani Cuauhtémoc and conquer the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. (13. August 1521)

Battle of Mactan: Explorer Ferdinand Magellan is killed by natives in the Philippines led by chief Lapu-Lapu. (27. April 1521)

Battle of Villalar: King Charles I of Spain defeats the Comuneros. (23. April 1521)

The Ottoman Turks capture Nándorfehérvár (Belgrade). (29. August 1521)

Swedish War of Liberation: Swedish troops under Gustav Vasa defeat a Danish force under Didrik Slagheck in the Battle of Västerås and soon capture the city of Västerås. The Danish-held castle, however, does not surrender to the Swedes until 31 January the following year, after a nine-month siege. (29. April 1521)

The Diet of Worms ends when Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, issues the Edict of Worms, declaring Martin Luther an outlaw. (25. May 1521)

Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, is executed for treason. (17. May 1521)

Trial of Martin Luther over his teachings begins during the assembly of the Diet of Worms. Initially intimidated, he asks for time to reflect before answering and is given a stay of one day. (17. April 1521)
