World War II: the Soviet Army enters Lviv, a major city in western Ukraine, capturing it from the Nazis. Only 300 Jews survive out of 160,000 living in Lviv prior to occupation. (26. July 1944)

World War II: The steamer Danae, carrying 350 Cretan Jews and 250 Cretan partisans, sunk without survivors off the shore of Santorini. (7. June 1944)

Dumbarton Oaks Conference, prelude to the United Nations, begins. (21. August 1944)

World War II: the Soviet Union invades East Karelia and the previously Finnish part of Karelia, occupied by Finland since 1941. (9. June 1944)

World War II: The Allies begin a major offensive against the Axis Powers on the Gustav Line. (11. May 1944)

Suffrage is extended to women in France. (5. October 1944)

Holocaust: diarist Anne Frank and her family are placed on the last transport train from the Westerbork transit camp to the Auschwitz concentration camp, arriving three days later. (3. September 1944)
