Harry Houdini performs his greatest feat, spending 91 minutes underwater in a sealed tank before escaping. (5. August 1926)

The College Board administers the first SAT exam. (23. June 1926)

The deadliest November tornado outbreak in U.S. history strikes on Thanksgiving day. Twenty-seven twisters of great strength are reported in the Midwest, including the strongest November tornado, an estimated F4, that devastates Heber Springs, Arkansas. There are 51 deaths in Arkansas alone, 76 deaths and over 400 injuries in all. (25. November 1926)

The United States Numbered Highway System, including U.S. Route 66, is established. (11. November 1926)

J. Gordon Whitehead sucker punches magician Harry Houdini in the stomach in Montreal, precipitating his death. (22. October 1926)

Harry Houdini's last performance, which is at the Garrick Theatre in Detroit, Michigan. (24. October 1926)

The international Convention to Suppress the Slave Trade and Slavery is first signed. (25. September 1926)

In New York, New York, the Warner Bros.' Vitaphone system premieres with the movie Don Juan starring John Barrymore. (6. August 1926)

Magician Harry Houdini dies of gangrene and peritonitis that develops after his appendix ruptures. (31. October 1926)

In the United States the National Broadcasting Company is formed. (9. September 1926)

The Italian-built airship Norge becomes the first vessel to fly over the North Pole. (12. May 1926)

The children's book Winnie-the-Pooh, by A. A. Milne, is first published. (14. October 1926)

Germany is admitted to the League of Nations. (8. September 1926)

Evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson disappears while visiting a Venice, California beach. (18. May 1926)
