The Seychelles become independent from the United Kingdom. (29. June 1976)

The opening of the Summer Olympics in Montreal is marred by 25 African teams boycotting the New Zealand team. (17. July 1976)

Viking program: The American Viking 2 spacecraft lands at Utopia Planitia on Mars. (3. September 1976)

Between 1,000 and 3,500 Palestinians are killed in the Tel al-Zaatar massacre, one of the bloodiest events of the Lebanese Civil War (12. August 1976)

The ferry George Prince is struck by a ship while crossing the Mississippi River between Destrehan and Luling, Louisiana. Seventy-eight passengers and crew die and only 18 people aboard the ferry survive. (20. October 1976)

Two Imperial Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantom II jets fly out to investigate an unidentified flying object when both independently lose instrumentation and communications as they approach, only to have them restored upon withdrawal. (19. September 1976)

The American Viking 1 lander successfully lands on Mars. (20. July 1976)

Fall of the Republic of Vietnam; Communist North Vietnam declares their union to form the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. (2. July 1976)

Former Japanese prime minister Kakuei Tanaka is arrested on suspicion of violating foreign exchange and foreign trade laws in connection with the Lockheed bribery scandals. (27. July 1976)

New Premier Hua Guofeng orders the arrest of the Gang of Four and associates and ends the Cultural Revolution in the People's Republic of China. (6. October 1976)

The Yuba City bus disaster occurs in Martinez, California. 29 are killed making it the deadliest road accident in U.S. history. (21. May 1976)

The Tangshan earthquake measuring between 7.8 and 8.2 moment magnitude flattens Tangshan in the People's Republic of China, killing 242,769 and injuring 164,851. (28. July 1976)

Official launch of the Intercity 125 High Speed Train (HST). (4. October 1976)

Christopher Ewart-Biggs, the British ambassador to the Republic of Ireland, is assassinated by the Provisional IRA. (21. July 1976)

Apneist Jacques Mayol is the first man to reach a depth of 100 m undersea without breathing equipment. (23. November 1976)

A Bolivian Boeing 707 cargo jet crashes in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, killing 100 (97, mostly children, killed on the ground). (13. October 1976)

Missouri Governor Kit Bond issues an executive order rescinding the Extermination Order, formally apologizing on behalf of the state of Missouri for the suffering it had caused to the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. (25. June 1976)
