World War I: the Battle of Haelen a.k.a. (Battle of the Silver Helmets) last cavalry style attack from the German army on the city of Halen, Belgium. (12. August 1914)

In Cleveland, Ohio, the first electric traffic light is installed. (5. August 1914)

The last Passenger Pigeon, a female named Martha, dies in captivity in the Cincinnati Zoo. (1. September 1914)

World War I: German forces occupy Brussels. (20. August 1914)

The United Kingdom's House of Commons passes the Home Rule Act for devolution in Ireland. (25. May 1914)

Austria-Hungary issues a series of demands in an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia demanding Serbia to allow the Austrians to determine who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Serbia will accept all but one of those demands and Austria will declare war on July 28. (23. July 1914)

French composer Albéric Magnard killed after shooting at invading German soldiers. (3. September 1914)

The First Battle of Ypres begins. (19. October 1914)

The Ocean liner RMS Empress of Ireland sinks in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence with the loss of 1,024 lives. (29. May 1914)

Serbia and Bulgaria interrupt diplomatic relationship. (26. July 1914)

The Irish Home Rule Act becomes law, but is delayed until after World War I. (18. September 1914)

World War I: Siege of Antwerp – Antwerp, Belgium falls to German troops. (9. October 1914)

World War I: The Siege of Przemyśl (present-day Poland) begins. (24. September 1914)

The U.S. Congress forms the Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps, giving official status to aircraft within the U.S. Army for the first time. (18. July 1914)

In Brazil, Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras is founded. (26. August 1914)

World War I: Battle of Mons; the British Army begins withdrawal. (23. August 1914)
