An explosion kills more than 100 and destroys the T.A. Gillespie Company Shell Loading Plant in Sayreville, New Jersey. Fires and explosions continue for three days forcing massive evacuations and spreading ordnance over a wide area, pieces of which were still being found as of 2007. (4. October 1918)

The Hammond Circus Train Wreck kills 86 and injures 127 near Hammond, Indiana. (22. June 1918)

World War I, Western Front: Battle for Belleau Wood – Allied Forces under John J. Pershing and James Harbord defeat Imperial German Forces under Wilhelm, German Crown Prince. (26. June 1918)

The Ottoman Empire signs an armistice with the Allies, ending the First World War in the Middle East. (30. October 1918)

World War I: Arab forces under T. E. Lawrence, also known as "Lawrence of Arabia", capture Damascus. (1. October 1918)

The Western Union Cable Office in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, receives a top-secret coded message from Europe (that would be sent to Ottawa, Ontario, and Washington, DC) that said on November 11, 1918, all fighting would cease on land, sea and in the air. (10. November 1918)

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) established as a public company in Germany. (13. August 1918)

Latvia declares its independence from Russia. (18. November 1918)

The 1918 influenza epidemic spreads to Western Samoa, killing 7,542 (about 20% of the population) by the end of the year. (7. November 1918)

World War I: The Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the bloodiest single battle in American history, begins. (26. September 1918)

Józef Piłsudski assumes supreme military power in Poland - symbolic first day of Polish independence. (11. November 1918)

World War I: the Battle of Amiens begins a string of almost continuous victories with a push through the German front lines (Hundred Days Offensive). (8. August 1918)

The Austro-Hungarian battleship SMS Szent István sinks off the Croatian coast after being torpedoed by an Italian MAS motorboat; the event is recorded by camera from a nearby vessel. (10. June 1918)

A massive forest fire kills 453 people in Minnesota. (12. October 1918)

The German High Seas Fleet is incapacitated when sailors mutiny on the night of the 29th-30th, an action which would trigger the German Revolution of 1918–19. (29. October 1918)

Erich Ludendorff, quartermaster-general of the Imperial German Army, is dismissed by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany for refusing to cooperate in peace negotiations. (26. October 1918)

Great Train Wreck of 1918: in Nashville, Tennessee, an inbound local train collides with an outbound express killing 101 and injuring 171 people, making it the deadliest rail accident in United States history. (9. July 1918)

King Boris III of Bulgaria accedes to the throne. (3. October 1918)

World War I: In the Argonne Forest in France, United States Corporal Alvin C. York kills 28 German soldiers and captures 132, for which he is awarded the Medal of Honor. (8. October 1918)
