A Soviet supersonic Tupolev Tu-144 crashes near Goussainville, France, killing 14, the first crash of a supersonic passenger aircraft. (3. June 1973)

Signature of the European Patent Convention. (5. October 1973)

The President of Uruguay Juan María Bordaberry dissolves Parliament and establishes a dictatorship. (27. June 1973)

Yom Kippur War ends. (24. October 1973)

The Pakistani Constitution of 1973 comes into effect. (14. August 1973)

Yom Kippur War: Gabi Amir's armored brigade attacks Egyptian occupied positions on the Israeli side of the Suez Canal, in hope of driving them away. The attack fails, and over 150 Israeli tanks are destroyed. (8. October 1973)

President Richard Nixon rejects an Appeals Court decision that he turn over the Watergate tapes. (19. October 1973)

Varig Flight 820 crashes near Paris, France on approach to Orly Airport, killing 123 of the 134 on board. (11. July 1973)

In horseracing, Secretariat wins the Triple Crown. (9. June 1973)

King Mohammed Zahir Shah of Afghanistan is deposed by his cousin Mohammed Daoud Khan while in Italy undergoing eye surgery. (17. July 1973)

Juan Perón returns to power in Argentina. (23. September 1973)

John Paul Getty III, a grandson of the oil magnate J. Paul Getty, is kidnapped in Rome, Italy. (10. July 1973)

The Netherlands experiences the first Car Free Sunday caused by the 1973 oil crisis. Highways are deserted and are used only by cyclists and roller skaters. (4. November 1973)

Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho are awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. (16. October 1973)

A Delta Air Lines jetliner, flight DL 723 crashes while landing in fog at Logan International Airport, Boston, Massachusetts killing 89. (31. July 1973)

A fire destroys the entire 6th floor of the National Personnel Records Center of the United States. (12. July 1973)
