An unidentified hijacker named "Vrillon", claiming to be the representative of the "Ashtar Galactic Command", takes over Britain's Southern Television for six minutes, starting at 5:12 pm. (26. November 1977)

The Torrijos-Carter Treaties between Panama and the United States on the status of the Panama Canal are signed. The United States agrees to transfer control of the canal to Panama at the end of the 20th century. (7. September 1977)

Jean-Bédel Bokassa, president of the Central African Republic, crowns himself Emperor Bokassa I of the Central African Empire. (4. December 1977)

Voyager program: Voyager 1 is launched after a brief delay. (5. September 1977)

Digital Equipment Corporation releases OpenVMS V1.0. (25. October 1977)

South Ockendon Windmill, a smock mill at South Ockendon, Essex, England collapsed. (2. November 1977)

A United States Navy McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II crashes into a residential neighborhood in Yokohama, Japan, killing two children on the ground and injuring seven other people. (27. September 1977)

Convicted Martin Luther King Jr. assassin James Earl Ray is recaptured after escaping from prison three days before. (13. June 1977)

Hanns Martin Schleyer is kidnapped in Cologne, West Germany by the Red Army Faction and is later murdered. (5. September 1977)

The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization disbands. (30. June 1977)

The Gossamer Condor wins the Kremer prize for human powered flight. (23. August 1977)

The 300 metre tall CKVR-DT transmission tower in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, is hit by a light aircraft in a fog, causing it to collapse. All aboard the aircraft are killed. (7. September 1977)

James Earl Ray escapes from Brushy Mountain State Prison in Petros, Tennessee, but is recaptured on June 13. (10. June 1977)

The Golden Dragon Massacre took place in San Francisco, California. (4. September 1977)
