Zanzibar gains independence from the United Kingdom as a constitutional monarchy, under Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah. (10. December 1963)

The Convention on the Unification of Certain Points of Substantive Law on Patents for Invention is signed at Strasbourg. (27. November 1963)

Turkish Cypriot Bayrak Radio begins transmitting in Cyprus after Turkish Cypriots are forcibly excluded from Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation. (25. December 1963)

The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing: Four children killed at an African-American church in Birmingham, Alabama, United States (15. September 1963)

In Dallas, Texas, US President John F. Kennedy is assassinated and Texas Governor John Connally is seriously wounded. Suspect Lee Harvey Oswald is later captured and charged with the murder of both the President and police officer J. D. Tippit. Oswald is shot two days later by Jack Ruby while in police custody. (22. November 1963)

In northeast Italy, over 2,000 people are killed when a large landslide behind the Vajont Dam causes a giant wave of water to overtop it. (9. October 1963)

France cedes control of the Bizerte naval base to Tunisia. (10. October 1963)

Malaysia is formed from the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak. However, Singapore soon leaves this new country. (16. September 1963)

John F. Kennedy signs the ratification of the Partial Test Ban Treaty. (7. October 1963)

Trans-Canada Air Lines Flight 831 crashes shortly after takeoff from Montreal-Dorval International Airport, killing all 118 people on board. (29. November 1963)

North Borneo (now Sabah) achieve a self governance. (31. August 1963)

Instant replay makes its debut during an American Army–Navy football game. (7. December 1963)

Syncom 2, the world's first geosynchronous satellite, is launched from Cape Canaveral on a Delta B booster. (26. July 1963)

Hurricane Flora, kills 6,000 in Cuba and Haiti. (4. October 1963)

A BAC One-Eleven prototype airliner crashes in UK with the loss of all on board. (22. October 1963)

Joe Walker flies a North American X-15 to a record altitude of 106,010 meters (347,800 feet) on X-15 Flight 90. Exceeding an altitude of 100 km, this flight qualifies as a human spaceflight under international convention. (19. July 1963)
