Gary Gabelich sets a land speed record in a rocket-powered automobile called the Blue Flame, fueled with natural gas. (23. October 1970)

Vietnam War: Lieutenant William Calley goes on trial for the My Lai Massacre. (17. November 1970)

Southern Airways Flight 932 crashes in the mountains near Huntington, West Virginia, killing 75, including members of the Marshall University football team. (14. November 1970)

Montreal: British Trade Commissioner James Cross is kidnapped by members of the FLQ terrorist group, triggering the October Crisis. (5. October 1970)

Palestinian terrorists blow up three hijacked airliners in Jordan, continuing to hold the passengers hostage in various undisclosed locations in Amman. (12. September 1970)

Luna programme: The Soviet Union lands Lunokhod 1 on Mare Imbrium (Sea of Rains) on the Moon. This is the first roving remote-controlled robot to land on another world and is released by the orbiting Luna 17 spacecraft. (17. November 1970)

Polish 1970 protests: In Gdynia, soldiers fire at workers emerging from trains, killing dozens. (17. December 1970)

Montreal, Quebec: Quebec Vice-Premier and Minister of Labour Pierre Laporte murdered by members of the FLQ terrorist group. (17. October 1970)

Jochen Rindt become the only driver to posthumously win the Formula One World Drivers' Championship (in 1970), after being killed in practice for the Italian Grand Prix. (5. September 1970)

Bhola cyclone: A 150-mph tropical cyclone hits the densely populated Ganges Delta region of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), killing an estimated 500,000 people in one night. This is regarded as the 20th century's worst natural disaster. (13. November 1970)

In Montreal, Quebec, a national crisis hits Canada when Quebec Vice-Premier and Minister of Labour Pierre Laporte becomes the second statesman kidnapped by members of the FLQ terrorist group. (10. October 1970)
