Armenia declares its independence from the Soviet Union. (23. August 1990)

Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: In Jerusalem, Israeli police kill 17 Palestinians and wound over 100 near the Dome of the Rock mosque on the Temple Mount. (8. October 1990)

Iraq invades Kuwait, eventually leading to the Gulf War. (2. August 1990)

Iraq occupies Kuwait and the state is annexed to Iraq. This would lead to the Gulf War shortly afterward. (8. August 1990)

France announces it will send 4,000 troops to the Persian Gulf. (15. September 1990)

German reunification. The German Democratic Republic ceases to exist and its territory becomes part of the Federal Republic of Germany. East German citizens became part of the European Community, which later became the European Union. Now celebrated as German Unity Day. (3. October 1990)

The Dalai Lama unveils the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights in Canada's capital city of Ottawa. (30. September 1990)

Gulf War: the United Nations Security Council orders a global trade embargo against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. (6. August 1990)

Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to lessen Cold War tensions and open up his nation. (15. October 1990)

South Ossetia declares its independence from Georgia. (20. September 1990)

Sri Lankan Civil War: Sri Lankan Army soldiers slaughter 158 civilians. (5. September 1990)

West Germany and East Germany announce that they will reunite on October 3. (23. August 1990)

The railroad between the People's Republic of China and Kazakhstan is completed at Dostyk, adding a sizable link to the concept of the Eurasian Land Bridge. (16. September 1990)

Saddam Hussein appears on Iraqi state television with a number of Western "guests" (actually hostages) to try to prevent the Gulf War. (23. August 1990)

Sue, the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton found to date, was discovered by Sue Hendrickson in South Dakota. (12. August 1990)

1990 Batticaloa massacre, massacre of 184 minority Tamil civilians by Sri Lankan Army in the eastern Batticaloa District of Sri Lanka. (9. September 1990)

Tim Berners-Lee opens the WWW - World Wide Web to new users. (23. August 1990)

Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti reveals to the Italian parliament the existence of Gladio, the Italian "stay-behind" clandestine paramilitary NATO army, which was implicated in false flag terrorist attacks implicating communists and anarchists as part of the strategy of tension from the late 1960s to early 1980s. (24. October 1990)
