The 1976 Çaldıran-Muradiye earthquake in eastern Turkey kills between 4,000 and 5,000 people. (24. November 1976)

Official launch of the Intercity 125 High Speed Train (HST). (4. October 1976)

George Washington's appointment, posthumously, to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States by congressional joint resolution Public Law 94-479 is approved by President Gerald R. Ford. (11. October 1976)

The ferry George Prince is struck by a ship while crossing the Mississippi River between Destrehan and Luling, Louisiana. Seventy-eight passengers and crew die and only 18 people aboard the ferry survive. (20. October 1976)

A British Airways Hawker Siddeley Trident and an Inex-Adria DC-9 collide near Zagreb, Yugoslavia, killing 176. (10. September 1976)

Hua Guofeng becomes Mao Zedong's successor as chairman of Communist Party of China, following the latter's death barely a month earlier. (7. October 1976)

Seychelles joins the United Nations. (21. September 1976)

Red Dye No. 4 is banned by the US Food and Drug Administration after it is discovered that it causes tumors in the bladders of dogs. The dye is still used in Canada. (22. October 1976)

Apneist Jacques Mayol is the first man to reach a depth of 100 m undersea without breathing equipment. (23. November 1976)

The first Space Shuttle, Enterprise, is unveiled by NASA. (17. September 1976)

Orlando Letelier is assassinated in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the Chilean socialist government of Salvador Allende, overthrown in 1973 by Augusto Pinochet. (21. September 1976)

New Premier Hua Guofeng orders the arrest of the Gang of Four and associates and ends the Cultural Revolution in the People's Republic of China. (6. October 1976)

Shavarsh Karapetyan saves 20 people from the trolleybus that had fallen into Erevan reservoir. (16. September 1976)

Viking program: The American Viking 2 spacecraft lands at Utopia Planitia on Mars. (3. September 1976)

Viking program: Viking 2 enters orbit around Mars. (7. August 1976)

Cold War: Soviet air force pilot Lt. Viktor Belenko lands a Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 jet fighter at Hakodate on the island of Hokkaidō in Japan and requests political asylum in the United States; his request is granted. (6. September 1976)

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto lays the foundation stone of Port Qasim, Karachi. (6. August 1976)

René Lévesque and the Parti Québécois take power to become the first Quebec government of the 20th century clearly in favor of independence. (15. November 1976)

A series of earthquakes spreads panic in the city of Thessaloniki, which is evacuated. (8. November 1976)
