The World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider this date the anniversary of the eradication of smallpox, the most spectacular success of vaccination. (26. TAP Portugal Flight 425 crashes in the Madeira Islands, killing 130. (19. November 1977)
The 1977 riots in Sri Lanka, targeting the minority Sri Lankan Tamil people, begin, less than a month after the United National Party came to power. Over 300 Tamils are killed. (12. August 1977)
