Walt Disney World opens near Orlando, Florida, United States. (1. October 1971)

Having weakened after making landfall in Nicaragua the previous day, Hurricane Irene regains enough strength to be renamed Hurricane Olivia, making it the first known hurricane to cross from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific. (20. September 1971)

The United Kingdom recognizes Bahrain's independence. This is commemorated annually as Bahrain's National Day. (16. December 1971)

The Egyptian Constitution becomes official. (11. September 1971)

Wasfi al-Tal, Prime Minister of Jordan, is assassinated by the Black September unit of the Palestine Liberation Organization. (28. November 1971)

Alaska Airlines Flight 1866 crashes near Juneau, Alaska, killing all 111 people on board. (4. September 1971)

Indo-Pakistani War: The Indian Navy launches an attack on West Pakistan's port city of Karachi. (8. December 1971)

During a severe thunderstorm over Washington state, a hijacker calling himself Dan Cooper (aka D. B. Cooper) parachutes from a Northwest Orient Airlines plane with $200,000 in ransom money. He has never been found. (24. November 1971)

Pakistan severs diplomatic relations with India following New Delhi's recognition of Bangladesh. (6. December 1971)

Sold, dismantled and moved to the United States, London Bridge reopens in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. (10. October 1971)

A gas explosion kills 22 people at a shopping center in Clarkston, East Renfrewshire, near Glasgow, Scotland. (21. October 1971)
