German Autumn: Four days after it is hijacked, Lufthansa Flight 181 lands in Mogadishu, Somalia, where a team of German GSG 9 commandos later rescues all remaining hostages on board. (17. October 1977)

South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko dies in police custody. (12. September 1977)

TAP Portugal Flight 425 crashes in the Madeira Islands, killing 130. (19. November 1977)

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat becomes the first Arab leader to officially visit Israel, when he meets Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin and speaks before the Knesset in Jerusalem, seeking a permanent peace settlement. (20. November 1977)

German Autumn: a set of events revolving around the kidnapping of Hanns-Martin Schleyer and the hijacking of a Lufthansa flight by the Red Army Faction (RAF) comes to an end when Schleyer is murdered and various RAF members allegedly commit suicide. (18. October 1977)

South Ockendon Windmill, a smock mill at South Ockendon, Essex, England collapsed. (2. November 1977)

In Alicante, Spain, fascists attack a group of MCPV militants and sympathizers, and one MCPV sympathizer is killed. (6. October 1977)

The Kelly Barnes Dam, located above Toccoa Falls Bible College near Toccoa, Georgia, fails, killing 39. (6. November 1977)

Four Palestinians hijack Lufthansa Flight 181 to Somalia and demand release of 11 members of the Red Army Faction. (13. October 1977)

The Torrijos-Carter Treaties between Panama and the United States on the status of the Panama Canal are signed. The United States agrees to transfer control of the canal to Panama at the end of the 20th century. (7. September 1977)

A United States Navy McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II crashes into a residential neighborhood in Yokohama, Japan, killing two children on the ground and injuring seven other people. (27. September 1977)

About 4,200 people take part in the first running of the Chicago Marathon. (25. September 1977)

Former Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., is found guilty by the Philippine Military Commission No. 2 and is sentenced to death by firing squad. (25. November 1977)

Hanns Martin Schleyer is kidnapped in Cologne, West Germany by the Red Army Faction and is later murdered. (5. September 1977)

The European Patent Institute is founded. (21. October 1977)

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is admitted to the United Nations. (20. September 1977)

An unidentified hijacker named "Vrillon", claiming to be the representative of the "Ashtar Galactic Command", takes over Britain's Southern Television for six minutes, starting at 5:12 pm. (26. November 1977)

A nuclear non-proliferation pact is signed by 15 countries, including the United States and the Soviet Union. (21. September 1977)
