Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia join the United Nations. (12. November 1956)

Soviet troops enter Hungary to end the Hungarian revolution against the Soviet Union, that started on October 23. Thousands are killed, more are wounded, and nearly a quarter million leave the country. (4. November 1956)

USAF Captain Milburn G. Apt becomes the first man to exceed Mach 3 while flying the Bell X-2. Shortly thereafter, the craft goes out of control and Captain Apt is killed. (27. September 1956)

Colo, the first gorilla to be bred in captivity, is born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio. (22. December 1956)

Trans-Canada Air Lines Flight 810, a Canadair North Star, crashes near Hope, British Columbia, Canada, killing all 62 people on board. (9. December 1956)

The Tangier Protocol is signed: The international city Tangier is reintegrated into Morocco. (29. October 1956)

The Million Dollar Quartet (Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash) get together at Sun Studios for the first and last time. (4. December 1956)

Elvis Presley appears on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first time. (9. September 1956)

The Supreme Court of the United States declares Alabama laws requiring segregated buses illegal, thus ending the Montgomery Bus Boycott. (13. November 1956)

Suez Crisis: The United Kingdom and France begin bombing Egypt to force the reopening of the Suez Canal. (31. October 1956)

In India, Kanyakumari district is joined to Tamilnadu state from Kerala. (1. November 1956)

Japan joins the United Nations. (18. December 1956)

The Granma reaches the shores of Cuba's Oriente province. Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and 80 other members of the 26th of July Movement disembark to initiate the Cuban Revolution. (2. December 1956)

Thousands of Hungarians protest against the government and Soviet occupation. (The Hungarian Revolution is crushed on November 4). (23. October 1956)

Donald Byrne and Bobby Fischer play a famous chess game called The Game of the Century. Fischer beat Byrne and wins a Brilliancy prize. (17. October 1956)

New York Yankees's Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in a World Series; one of only 21 perfect games in MLB history. (8. October 1956)

Suez Crisis: The United Nations General Assembly adopts a resolution calling for the United Kingdom, France and Israel to immediately withdraw their troops from Egypt. (7. November 1956)

The IBM 305 RAMAC is introduced, the first commercial computer to use disk storage. (13. September 1956)
