The Citizen's Committee of Public Safety, led by Lorrin A. Thurston, overthrows the government of Queen Liliuokalani of the Kingdom of Hawaii. (17. January 1893)

Henrik Ibsen's play The Master Builder receives its premiere performance in Berlin. (19. January 1893)

The Tati Concessions Land, formerly part of Matabeleland, is formally annexed to the Bechuanaland Protectorate, now Botswana. (21. January 1893)

Grover Cleveland notices a rough spot in his mouth and on July 1 undergoes secret, successful surgery to remove a large, cancerous portion of his jaw; operation not revealed to US public until 1917, nine years after the president's death. (13. June 1893)

Lizzie Borden is acquitted of the murders of her father and stepmother. (20. June 1893)

The Royal Navy battleship HMS Camperdown accidentally rams the British Mediterranean Fleet flagship HMS Victoria which sinks taking 358 crew with her, including the fleet's commander, Vice-Admiral Sir George Tryon. (22. June 1893)

The small town of Pomeroy, Iowa, is nearly destroyed by a tornado that killed 71 people and injured 200. (6. July 1893)

The first cultured pearl is obtained by Kokichi Mikimoto. (11. July 1893)

A revolution led by the liberal general and politician, José Santos Zelaya, takes over state power in Nicaragua. (11. July 1893)
