The National Hockey League cancels the entire 2004-2005 regular season and playoffs. (16. February 2005)

Spain becomes the first country to vote in a referendum on ratification of the proposed Constitution of the European Union, passing it by a substantial margin, but on a low turnout. (20. February 2005)

The controversial French law on colonialism is passed, requiring teachers to teach the "positive values of colonialism". After public outcry, it is repealed at the beginning of 2006. (23. February 2005)

A suicide bombing at a police recruiting centre in Al Hillah, Iraq kills 127. (28. February 2005)

U.S. Supreme Court rules that the execution of juveniles found guilty of murder is unconstitutional marking a change in "national standards,". (1. March 2005)

Mayerthorpe tragedy: James Roszko murders four Royal Canadian Mounted Police constables during a drug bust at his property in Rochfort Bridge, Alberta, then commits suicide. It is the deadliest peace-time incident for the RCMP since 1885 and the North-West Rebellion. (3. March 2005)

Steve Fossett becomes the first person to fly an airplane non-stop around the world solo without refueling. (3. March 2005)

The Taiwanese government calls on 1 million Taiwanese to demonstrate in Taipei, in opposition to the Anti-Secession Law of the People's Republic of China. Around 200,000 to 300,000 attend the demonstration. (26. March 2005)

The 2005 Sumatra earthquake rocks Indonesia, and at magnitude 8.7 is the fourth strongest earthquake since 1965. (28. March 2005)
