Siege of Rome: The Byzantine general Belisarius receives his promised reinforcements, 1,600 cavalry, mostly of Hunnic or Slavic origin and expert bowmen. He starts, despite of shortages, raids against the Gothic camps and Vitiges is forced into a stalemate. (9. April 537)

Battle of Callinicum: A Byzantine army under Belisarius is defeated by the Persian at Ar-Raqqah (northern Syria). (19. April 531)

Prophet Muhammad is born in Makkah. (21. April 571)

Maya king Uneh Chan of Calakmul attacks rival city-state Palenque in southern Mexico, defeating queen Yohl Ik'nal and sacking the city. (23. April 599)

King Sigismund of Burgundy is executed at Orléans after an 8-year reign and is succeeded by his brother Godomar. (1. May 524)

The Second Council of Constantinople begins. (5. May 553)

In Constantinople, the dome of the Hagia Sophia collapses. Justinian I immediately orders that the dome be rebuilt. (7. May 558)

Reccared I summons the Third Council of Toledo. (8. May 589)

King Authari marries Theodelinda, daughter of the Bavarian duke Garibald I. A Catholic, she has great influence among the Lombard nobility. (15. May 589)

An earthquake kills about 250,000 people in what is now Syria and Antiochia. (20. May 526)

Servius Tullius, the king of Rome, celebrates a triumph for his victory over the Etruscans. (25. May 567. BC)

A solar eclipse occurs, as predicted by the Greek philosopher and scientist Thales, while Alyattes is battling Cyaxares in the Battle of Halys, leading to a truce. This is one of the cardinal dates from which other dates can be calculated. (28. May 585. BC)

A devastating earthquake strikes Antioch, Turkey, killing 250,000. (31. May 526)

A Byzantine expeditionary fleet under Belisarius sails from Constantinople to attack the Vandals in Africa, via Greece and Sicily. (21. June 533)

The Franks are defeated by the Burgundians in the Battle of Vézeronce. (25. June 524)

Battle of Taginae: Byzantine forces under Narses defeat the Ostrogoths in Italy. During the fightings king Totila is mortally wounded. (1. July 552)

Justinian I becomes the sole ruler of the Byzantine Empire. (1. August 527)

Goguryeo-Sui War: Emperor Wéndi of Sui orders his youngest son, Yang Liang (assisted by the co-prime minister Gao Jiong), to conquer Goguryeo (Korea) during the Manchurian rainy season, with a Chinese army and navy. (4. August 598)

John I becomes the new Pope after the death of Pope Hormisdas. (13. August 523)
