Organization of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Battle Creek, Michigan. (21. May 1863)

American Civil War: The H. L. Hunley, the first submarine to sink a ship, sinks during a test, killing its inventor, Horace L. Hunley. (15. October 1863)

American Civil War: following his defeat in the Battle of Gettysburg, General Robert E. Lee sends a letter of resignation to Confederate President Jefferson Davis (which is refused upon receipt). (8. August 1863)
