The BBC Light Programme radio station is launched for mainstream light entertainment and music. (29. July 1945)

Pierre Laval, the fugitive former leader of Vichy France, surrenders to Allied soldiers in Austria. (31. July 1945)

Hong Kong is liberated from Japan by British Armed Forces. (30. August 1945)

World War II: The liberation of the Philippines is declared. (5. July 1945)

The Allied Control Council, the military occupation governing body of Germany, formally takes power. (5. June 1945)

World War II: Hiroshima, Japan is devastated when the atomic bomb "Little Boy" is dropped by the United States B-29 Enola Gay. Around 70,000 people are killed instantly, and some tens of thousands die in subsequent years from burns and radiation poisoning. (6. August 1945)

Puyi, the last Chinese emperor and ruler of Manchukuo, is captured by Soviet troops. (16. August 1945)

The Potsdam Declaration is signed in Potsdam, Germany. (26. July 1945)

The US Navy cruiser USS Indianapolis arrives at Tinian with parts of the warhead for the Hiroshima atomic bomb. (26. July 1945)

Manhattan Project: the Atomic Age begins when the United States successfully detonates a plutonium-based test nuclear weapon near Alamogordo, New Mexico. (16. July 1945)

The United Nations Charter is signed in San Francisco. (26. June 1945)

World War II: The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis leaves San Francisco with parts for the atomic bomb "Little Boy" bound for Tinian Island. (16. July 1945)

Ten days after World War II ends with Japan announcing its surrender, armed supporters of the Chinese Communist Party kill U.S. intelligence officer John Birch, regarded by some of the American right as the first victim of the Cold War. (25. August 1945)

The Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Douglas MacArthur lands at Atsugi Air Force Base. (30. August 1945)

King Haakon VII of Norway returned with his family to Oslo after five years in exile. (7. June 1945)
