A massive power blackout hits the Indonesian island of Java, affecting almost 100 million people, the one of the largest and most widespread power outages in history. (18. August 2005)

The Deep Impact collider hits the comet Tempel 1. (4. July 2005)

A series of four explosions occurs on London's transport system killing 56 people including four alleged suicide bombers and injuring over 700 others. (7. July 2005)

Same-sex marriage in Spain becomes legal. (3. July 2005)

A series of strong storms lashes Southern Ontario spawning several tornadoes as well as creating extreme flash flooding within the city of Toronto and its surrounding communities. In Toronto, it is also dubbed the "Toronto Supercell". (19. August 2005)

Jean Charles de Menezes is killed by police as the hunt begins for the London Bombers responsible for the 7 July 2005 London bombings and the 21 July 2005 London bombings. (22. July 2005)

The first forced evacuation of settlers, as part of Israel's unilateral disengagement plan, starts. (17. August 2005)

President of Mauritania Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya is overthrown in a military coup while attending the funeral of King Fahd in Saudi Arabia. (3. August 2005)

Tornadoes touch down in residential areas in south Birmingham and Coventry, England, causing £4,000,000 worth of damages and injuring 39 people. (28. July 2005)

Hurricane Dennis slams into the Florida Panhandle, causing billions of dollars in damage. (10. July 2005)

Four terrorist bombings, occurring exactly two weeks after the similar July 7 bombings, target London's public transportation system. All four bombs fail to detonate and all four suspected suicide bombers are captured and later convicted and imprisoned for long terms. (21. July 2005)

Hurricane Katrina devastates much of the U.S. Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, killing more than 1,836 and causing over $80 billion in damage. (29. August 2005)
