World War I: USS Jacob Jones is the first American destroyer to be sunk by enemy action when it is torpedoed by German submarine SM U-53. (6. December 1917)

The Battle of Broodseinde fought between the British and German armies in Flanders. (4. October 1917)

World War I: At Vincennes outside of Paris, Dutch dancer Mata Hari is executed by firing squad for spying for the German Empire. (15. October 1917)

World War I: Russia and the Central Powers sign an armistice at Brest-Litovsk, and peace talks leading to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk begin. (2. December 1917)

Halifax Explosion: A munitions explosion near Halifax, Nova Scotia kills more than 1,900 people in the largest artificial explosion up to that time. (6. December 1917)

In Nebraska, Father Edward J. Flanagan founds Boys Town as a farm village for wayward boys. (12. December 1917)

October Revolution: In Tallinn, Estonia, Communist leader Jaan Anvelt leads revolutionaries in overthrowing the Provisional Government (As Estonia and Russia are still using the Julian Calendar, subsequent period references show an October 23 date). (5. November 1917)

Ukraine is declared a republic. (20. November 1917)

St. Tikhon of Moscow is elected the Patriarch of Moscow and of the Russian Orthodox Church. (5. November 1917)

World War I: Battle of Beersheba – the "last successful cavalry charge in history". (31. October 1917)

World War I: The First Battle of Passchendaele takes place resulting in the largest single day loss of life in New Zealand history. (12. October 1917)

World War I: Brazil declared in state of war with Central Powers. (26. October 1917)

Cheka, the first Soviet secret police force, is founded. (20. December 1917)

World War I: Battle of Caporetto; Italy suffers a catastrophic defeat at the forces of Austria-Hungary and Germany. The young unknown Oberleutnant Erwin Rommel captures Mount Matajur with only 100 Germans against a force of over 7000 Italians. (26. October 1917)

The Estonian Provincial Assembly declares itself the sovereign power of Estonia. (28. November 1917)

The resolution containing the language of the Eighteenth Amendment to enact Prohibition is passed by the United States Congress. (18. December 1917)

The Love Field in Dallas, Texas is opened. (19. October 1917)

In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 9 members of the Milwaukee Police Department are killed by a bomb, the most deaths in a single event in U.S. police history until the September 11 attacks in 2001. (24. November 1917)

Lenin calls for the October Revolution. (23. October 1917)
