Great Ormond St Hospital for Sick Children, the first hospital in England to provide in-patient beds specifically for children (The National Children's Hospital in Dublin was founded over 30 years previously in 1821), is founded in London. (14. February 1852)

Tlingit Indians destroy Fort Selkirk, Yukon Territory. (21. August 1852)

The University of Sydney, Australia's oldest university, is inaugurated in Sydney. (11. October 1852)

Justo José de Urquiza defeats Juan Manuel de Rosas at the Battle of Caseros. (3. February 1852)

The United Kingdom recognizes the independence of the Boer colonies of the Transvaal. (17. January 1852)

The first airship powered by (a steam) engine, created by Henri Giffard, travels 17 miles (27 km) from Paris to Trappes. (24. September 1852)

The Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, one of the largest and oldest museums in the world, opens to the public. (5. February 1852)

Congress establishes the United States' 2nd mint in San Francisco. (3. July 1852)

The State of Buenos Aires secedes from the Argentine Federal government, rejoining on 17 September 17, 1861. Several places are named Once de Septiembre after this event. (11. September 1852)

Harvard University wins the first Boat Race between Yale University and Harvard. The race is also the first American intercollegiate athletic event (3. August 1852)

Jenny Lind left New York after her wildly successful two-year American tour. (29. May 1852)
