U.S. Supreme Court rules that the execution of juveniles found guilty of murder is unconstitutional marking a change in "national standards,". (1. March 2005)

Four terrorist bombings, occurring exactly two weeks after the similar July 7 bombings, target London's public transportation system. All four bombs fail to detonate and all four suspected suicide bombers are captured and later convicted and imprisoned for long terms. (21. July 2005)

Saddam Hussein goes on trial in Baghdad for crimes against humanity. (19. October 2005)

The record for the most number of penalty kicks (40) taken in a Penalty shootout in a football match was set during an FA Cup Preliminary Round Replay match between Tunbridge Wells and Littlehampton Town at the Culverden Stadium in England. (31. August 2005)

The St Lawrence Lime is blown over in high winds. (7. January 2005)

Hurricane Wilma makes landfall in Florida resulting in 35 direct 26 indirect fatalities and causing $20.6B USD in damage. (24. October 2005)

Over four million people attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II. (8. April 2005)

Hurricane Katrina devastates much of the U.S. Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, killing more than 1,836 and causing over $80 billion in damage. (29. August 2005)

Steve Fossett becomes the first person to fly an airplane non-stop around the world solo without refueling. (3. March 2005)

A suicide bombing at a police recruiting centre in Al Hillah, Iraq kills 127. (28. February 2005)

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger is inaugurated as the 265th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church taking the name Pope Benedict XVI. (24. April 2005)

The Andijan Massacre occurs in Uzbekistan. (13. May 2005)

STS-114: NASA grounds the Space Shuttle, pending an investigation of the continuing problem with the shedding of foam insulation from the external fuel tank. During ascent, the external tank of the Space Shuttle Discovery sheds a piece of foam slightly smaller than the piece that caused the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster; this foam does not strike the spacecraft. (27. July 2005)

Plame affair: Lewis Libby, Vice-president Dick Cheney's chief of staff, is indicted in the Valerie Plame case. Libby resigns later that day. (28. October 2005)

A second photo from the Hubble Space Telescope confirms that Pluto has two additional moons: Nix and Hydra. (18. May 2005)

The controversial drawings of Muhammad are printed in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. (30. September 2005)

A series of strong storms lashes Southern Ontario spawning several tornadoes as well as creating extreme flash flooding within the city of Toronto and its surrounding communities. In Toronto, it is also dubbed the "Toronto Supercell". (19. August 2005)
