Ypiranga incident: A German arms shipment to Mexico is intercepted by the U.S. Navy near Veracruz, Veracruz. (21. April 1914)

Babe Ruth makes his debut in Major League Baseball. (11. July 1914)

The Protocol of Corfu is signed recognising full autonomy to Northern Epirus under nominal Albanian sovereignty. (17. May 1914)

Austria-Hungary issues a series of demands in an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia demanding Serbia to allow the Austrians to determine who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Serbia will accept all but one of those demands and Austria will declare war on July 28. (23. July 1914)

World War I: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia after Serbia rejects the conditions of an ultimatum sent by Austria on July 23 following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. (28. July 1914)

Copyright: In New York City the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers is established to protect the copyrighted musical compositions of its members. (13. February 1914)

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., the first historically black intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity to be officially recognized at Howard University, is founded. (9. January 1914)

The new, and then the largest, Cunard ocean liner RMS Aquitania, 45,647 tons, sets sails on her maiden voyage from Liverpool, England, to New York, New York. (30. May 1914)

The Autonomous Republic of Northern Epirus is proclaimed in Gjirokastër, by the Greeks living in southern Albania. (28. February 1914)

The Ford Motor Company announces an eight-hour workday and that it would pay a "living wage" of at least $5 for a day's labor. (5. January 1914)

The U.S. Congress forms the Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps, giving official status to aircraft within the U.S. Army for the first time. (18. July 1914)

Charlie Chaplin's first film appearance, Making a Living premiered. (2. February 1914)
