American civil rights movement: The Orangeburg massacre: An attack on black students from South Carolina State University who are protesting racial segregation at the town's only bowling alley, leaves three or four dead in Orangeburg, South Carolina. (8. February 1968)

A B-52 bomber crashes near Thule Air Base, contaminating the area after its nuclear payload ruptures. One of the four bombs remains unaccounted for after the cleanup operation is complete. (21. January 1968)

The New York Central Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad are merged to form Penn Central Transportation. (1. February 1968)

James Anderson, Jr. posthumously receives the first Medal of Honor to be awarded to an African American U.S. Marine. (21. August 1968)

BOAC Flight 712 catches fire shortly after take off. As a result of her actions in the accident, Barbara Jane Harrison is awarded a posthumous George Cross, the only GC awarded to a woman in peacetime. (8. April 1968)

Garfield Sobers became the first batsman ever to hit six sixes in a single over of six consecutive balls in first-class cricket. (31. August 1968)

A revolution occurs in Iraq when Abdul Rahman Arif is overthrown and the Ba'ath Party is installed as the governing power in Iraq with Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr as the new Iraqi President. (17. July 1968)
