A massive power blackout hits the Indonesian island of Java, affecting almost 100 million people, the one of the largest and most widespread power outages in history. (18. August 2005)

Ethan Allen boating accident: The Ethan Allen tour boat capsizes on Lake George in Upstate New York, killing twenty people. (2. October 2005)

Mayerthorpe tragedy: James Roszko murders four Royal Canadian Mounted Police constables during a drug bust at his property in Rochfort Bridge, Alberta, then commits suicide. It is the deadliest peace-time incident for the RCMP since 1885 and the North-West Rebellion. (3. March 2005)

Hurricane Katrina devastates much of the U.S. Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, killing more than 1,836 and causing over $80 billion in damage. (29. August 2005)

The final piece of the Obelisk of Axum is returned to Ethiopia after being stolen by the invading Italian army in 1937. (25. April 2005)

Egypt holds its first-ever multi-party presidential election. (7. September 2005)

Texas City Refinery explosion: During a test on a distillation tower liquid waste builds up and flows out of a blowout tower. Waste fumes ignite and explode killing 15 workers. (23. March 2005)

Karolos Papoulias becomes President of Greece. (12. March 2005)

A series of strong storms lashes Southern Ontario spawning several tornadoes as well as creating extreme flash flooding within the city of Toronto and its surrounding communities. In Toronto, it is also dubbed the "Toronto Supercell". (19. August 2005)

Prime Minister Paul Martin announces that Michaëlle Jean will be Canada's 27th Governor General. (4. August 2005)

Over four million people attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II. (8. April 2005)

The Provisional Irish Republican Army calls an end to its thirty year long armed campaign in Northern Ireland. (28. July 2005)

The 2005 Sumatra earthquake rocks Indonesia, and at magnitude 8.7 is the fourth strongest earthquake since 1965. (28. March 2005)

Snuppy becomes world's first cloned dog. (24. April 2005)

Lebanese self-made billionaire and business tycoon Rafik Hariri is killed, along with 21 others, when explosives, equivalent of around 1,000 kg of TNT, are detonated as his motorcade drove near the St. George Hotel in Beirut. (14. February 2005)

Space Shuttle program: STS-114 Mission – Launch of Discovery, NASA's first scheduled flight mission after the Columbia Disaster in 2003. (26. July 2005)

Syria completes withdrawal from Lebanon, ending 29 years of occupation. (29. April 2005)

Two EMERCOM Il-76 aircraft land at a disaster aid staging area at Little Rock Air Force Base; the first time Russia has flown such a mission to North America. (8. September 2005)

Seven people are killed and 151 wounded in a series of bombings by suspected al-Qaeda-linked militants that hit the Philippines' Makati financial district in Metro Manila, Davao City, and General Santos City. (14. February 2005)
