Chinese Civil War: Chinese Communist forces occupy the city of Guangzhou (Canton), in Guangdong, China. (14. October 1949)

Gerald Lankester Harding and Roland de Vaux begin excavations at Cave 1 of the Qumran Caves, where they will eventually discover the first seven Dead Sea Scrolls. (15. February 1949)

George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four is published. (8. June 1949)

President of France Vincent Auriol and ex-emperor Bảo Đại sign the Élysée Accords, giving Vietnam greater independence from France and creating the State of Vietnam to oppose Viet Minh-led Democratic Republic of Vietnam. (8. March 1949)

Cardinal Mindszenty of Hungary is sentenced for treason. (8. February 1949)

Queen Charlotte earthquake: Canada's largest earthquake since the 1700 Cascadia earthquake (22. August 1949)

Siam officially changes its name to Thailand for the second time. The name had been in use since 1939 but was reverted in 1945. (11. May 1949)

Twelve nations sign the North Atlantic Treaty creating the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. (4. April 1949)

A riot breaks out in Austurvöllur square in Reykjavík, when Iceland joins NATO. (30. March 1949)

Eleven leaders of the American Communist Party are convicted, after a nine-month trial in a Federal District Court, of conspiring to advocate the violent overthrow of the U.S. Federal Government. (14. October 1949)

Israel and Syria sign a truce to end their nineteen-month war. (20. July 1949)

Israel joins the United Nations. (11. May 1949)

The Iva Valley Shooting occurs after the coal miners of Enugu in Nigeria go on strike over withheld wages; 21 miners are shot dead and 51 are wounded by police under the supervision of the British colonial administration of Nigeria. (18. November 1949)

The 26 counties of the Irish Free State become Ireland. (1. April 1949)

The celebrities Helen Keller, Dorothy Parker, Danny Kaye, Fredric March, John Garfield, Paul Muni and Edward G. Robinson are named in an FBI report as Communist Party members. (8. June 1949)
