Russian President Vladimir Putin signs a bill into law that officially establishes a new National Anthem of Russia, with music adopted from the anthem of the Soviet Union that was composed by Alexander Vasilyevich Alexandrov. (25. December 2000)

Yugoslav president Slobodan Milošević resigns. (6. October 2000)

Soyuz TM-31 launches, carrying the first resident crew to the International Space Station. The ISS has been crewed continuously since then. (31. October 2000)

Serbia and Montenegro joins the United Nations. (1. November 2000)

Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley is raised to the surface after 136 years on the ocean floor and 30 years after its discovery by undersea explorer E. Lee Spence. (8. August 2000)

Air France Flight 4590, a Concorde supersonic passenger jet, F-BTSC, crashes just after takeoff from Paris killing all 109 aboard and 4 on the ground. (25. July 2000)

The MS Express Samina sinks off Paros in the Aegean sea killing 80 passengers. (26. September 2000)

Operation Barras successfully frees six British soldiers held captive for over two weeks and contributes to the end of the Sierra Leone Civil War. (10. September 2000)

Section 28 (of the Local Government Act 1988), outlawing the 'promotion' of homosexuality in the United Kingdom, is repealed in Scotland with a 99 to 17 vote. (21. June 2000)

NASA launches STS-92, the 100th Space Shuttle mission, using Space Shuttle Discovery. (11. October 2000)

The 540-metre (1,772 ft)-tall Ostankino Tower in Moscow catches fire, three people are killed. (27. August 2000)

The Oscar class submarine K-141 Kursk of the Russian Navy explodes and sinks in the Barents Sea during a military exercise. (12. August 2000)

President Bill Clinton announces that accurate GPS access would no longer be restricted to the United States military. (2. May 2000)
