The Soviet Union lifts its blockade of Berlin. (12. May 1949)

At midnight 26 Irish counties officially leave the British Commonwealth. A 21-gun salute on O'Connell Bridge, Dublin, ushers in the Republic of Ireland. (17. April 1949)

Rainier III of Monaco becomes Prince of Monaco. (9. May 1949)

A riot breaks out in Austurvöllur square in Reykjavík, when Iceland joins NATO. (30. March 1949)

Chaim Weizmann begins his term as the first President of Israel. (17. February 1949)

Chinese Civil War: Establishment of the People's Liberation Army Navy. (23. April 1949)

Long-Haired Hare, starring Bugs Bunny, is released in theaters. (25. June 1949)

The Treaty of London establishes the Council of Europe in Strasbourg as the first European institution working for European integration. (5. May 1949)

The Federal Republic of Germany is established and the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany is proclaimed. (23. May 1949)

Ezra Pound is awarded the first Bollingen Prize in poetry by the Bollingen Foundation and Yale University. (19. February 1949)

The entire Torino football team (except for two players who did not take the trip: Sauro Tomà, due to an injury and Renato Gandolfi, because of coach request) is killed in a plane crash at the Superga hill at the edge of Turin, Italy. (4. May 1949)

The extensive deportation campaign known as March deportation is conducted in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to force collectivisation by way of terror. The Soviet authorities deport more than 92,000 people from the Baltics to remote areas of the Soviet Union. (25. March 1949)

Twelve nations sign the North Atlantic Treaty creating the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. (4. April 1949)

Thailand elects Orapin Chaiyakan, the first Thai female member of Thailand's Parliament. (5. June 1949)

The Knesset (Israeli parliament) convenes for the first time. (14. February 1949)

The first television western, Hopalong Cassidy, is aired on NBC starring William Boyd. (24. June 1949)

Mildred Gillars ("Axis Sally") is condemned to prison for treason. (8. March 1949)

Former First Lady of the Philippines Aurora Quezon, 61, is assassinated while en route to dedicate a hospital in memory of her late husband; her daughter and 10 others are also killed. (28. April 1949)
