Ernest Shackleton and five men of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition launch a lifeboat from uninhabited Elephant Island in the Southern Ocean to organise a rescue for the ice-trapped ship Endurance. (24. April 1916)

World War I: Austrian sabotage causes the sinking of the Italian battleship Leonardo da Vinci in Taranto. (2. August 1916)

World War I: Battle of Jutland – The British Grand Fleet under the command of John Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe and David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty engage the Imperial German Navy under the command of Reinhard Scheer and Franz von Hipper in the largest naval battle of the war, which proves indecisive. The Irish Nationalist and British diplomat Sir Roger Casement is sentenced to death for his part in the Easter Rising. (29. June 1916)
