Bhola cyclone: A 150-mph tropical cyclone hits the densely populated Ganges Delta region of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), killing an estimated 500,000 people in one night. This is regarded as the 20th century's worst natural disaster. (13. November 1970)

Apollo program: The ill-fated Apollo 13 spacecraft returns to Earth safely. (17. April 1970)
Cease-fire between Jordan and the Fedayeen ends fighting triggered by four hijackings on September 6 and 9. (25. September 1970)
Venera program: Venera 7 launched. It will later become the first spacecraft to successfully transmit data from the surface of another planet (Venus). (17. August 1970)
Vietnam War: Operation Ivory Coast – A joint Air Force and Army team raids the Son Tay prison camp in an attempt to free American prisoners of war thought to be held there. (21. November 1970)
