Commercial peat-cutters discover the preserved bog body of a man, called Lindow Man, at Lindow Moss, Cheshire, northwest England (1. August 1984)

Dwight Gooden sets the baseball record for strikeouts in a season by a rookie with 246, previously set by Herb Score in 1954. Gooden's 276 strikeouts that season, pitched in 218 innings, set the current record. (12. September 1984)

Homosexuality is declared legal in the Australian state of New South Wales. (8. June 1984)

Corporal Denis Lortie enters the Quebec National Assembly and opens fire, killing three and wounding 13. René Jalbert, sergeant-at-arms of the assembly, succeeds in calming him, for which he will later receive the Cross of Valour. (8. May 1984)

"We begin bombing in five minutes" – United States President Ronald Reagan, while running for re-election, jokes while preparing to make his weekly Saturday address on National Public Radio. (11. August 1984)

A suicide bomber in a car attacks the U.S. embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, killing twenty-two people. (20. September 1984)

103 Korean Martyrs are canonized by Pope John Paul II in Seoul (6. May 1984)

McDonald's massacre in San Ysidro, California: in a fast-food restaurant, James Oliver Huberty opens fire, killing 21 people and injuring 19 others before being shot dead by police. (18. July 1984)

Marc Garneau becomes the first Canadian in space, aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. (5. October 1984)

Advance Australia Fair is proclaimed as Australia's national anthem, and green and gold as the national colours. (19. April 1984)

The Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, orders an attack on the Golden Temple, the holiest site of the Sikh religion. (5. June 1984)

Vanessa Williams becomes the first Miss America to resign when she surrenders her crown after nude photos of her appeared in Penthouse magazine. (23. July 1984)

Six thousand miners in the United Kingdom begin their strike at Cortonwood Colliery. (5. March 1984)

The first Breeders' Cup takes place at Hollywood Park Racetrack. (10. November 1984)

Brighton hotel bombing: The Provisional Irish Republican Army attempt to assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet. Thatcher escapes but the bomb kills five people and wounds 31. (12. October 1984)

Operation Blue Star, a military offensive, is launched by the Indian government at Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine for the Sikhs, in Amritsar. The operation continues until June 6, with casualties, most of them civilians, in excess of 5,000. (3. June 1984)

Brunei joins the United Nations. (21. September 1984)

Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is assassinated by two Sikh security guards. Riots break out in New Delhi and other cities and nearly 10,000 Sikhs are killed. (31. October 1984)
