First ever Rugby World Cup kicks off with New Zealand playing Italy at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand. (22. May 1987)

In Tunisia, president Habib Bourguiba is overthrown and replaced by Prime Minister Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. (7. November 1987)

The 19-year-old West German pilot Mathias Rust evades Soviet Union air defenses and lands a private plane in the Red Square in Moscow, Russia. He is immediately detained and will not be released until August 3, 1988. (28. May 1987)

Continental Airlines Flight 1713, a Douglas DC-9-14 jetliner, crashes in a snowstorm at Denver's Stapleton International Airport, killing 28 occupants, while 54 survive the crash. (15. November 1987)

Sikh nationalists declares the independence of Khalistan from India; it is not internationally recognized. (7. October 1987)
