The Peekskill Riots erupt after a Paul Robeson concert in Peekskill, New York. (4. September 1949)

President of France Vincent Auriol and ex-emperor Bảo Đại sign the Élysée Accords, giving Vietnam greater independence from France and creating the State of Vietnam to oppose Viet Minh-led Democratic Republic of Vietnam. (8. March 1949)

Albert II, a rhesus monkey, rides a V2 rocket to an altitude of 134 km (83 mi), thereby becoming the first monkey in space. (14. June 1949)

At midnight 26 Irish counties officially leave the British Commonwealth. A 21-gun salute on O'Connell Bridge, Dublin, ushers in the Republic of Ireland. (17. April 1949)

Soviet atomic bomb project: The Soviet Union tests its first atomic bomb, known as First Lightning or Joe 1, at Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan. (29. August 1949)

Indonesian National Revolution: The Netherlands officially recognizes Indonesian independence. End of the Dutch East Indies. (27. December 1949)

Mildred Gillars ("Axis Sally") is condemned to prison for treason. (8. March 1949)

The Communist Party of China writes the Common Programme for the future People's Republic of China. (29. September 1949)

Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte are executed for assassinating Mahatma Gandhi. (15. November 1949)

Captain James Gallagher lands his B-50 Superfortress Lucky Lady II in Fort Worth, Texas after completing the first non-stop around-the-world airplane flight in 94 hours and one minute. (2. March 1949)

The Dutch–Indonesian Round Table Conference ends with the Netherlands agreeing to transfer sovereignty of the Dutch East Indies to the United States of Indonesia. (2. November 1949)

The Iva Valley Shooting occurs after the coal miners of Enugu in Nigeria go on strike over withheld wages; 21 miners are shot dead and 51 are wounded by police under the supervision of the British colonial administration of Nigeria. (18. November 1949)
