Amputee Steve Fonyo completes cross-Canada marathon at Victoria, British Columbia, after 14 months. (29. May 1985)

The Achille Lauro is hijacked by Palestine Liberation Organization. (7. October 1985)

Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev declares a moratorium on the deployment of middle-range missiles in Europe. (7. April 1985)

Arrow Air Flight 1285, a McDonnell Douglas DC-8, crashes after takeoff in Gander, Newfoundland, killing all 256 people on board, including 236 members of the United States Army's 101st Airborne Division. (12. December 1985)

Pennzoil wins a US$10.53 billion judgment against Texaco, in the largest civil verdict in the history of the United States, stemming from Texaco executing a contract to buy Getty Oil after Pennzoil had entered into an unsigned, yet still binding, buyout contract with Getty. (19. November 1985)

Xavier Suarez is sworn in as Miami, Florida's first Cuban-born mayor. (13. November 1985)

The White House Farm murders took place near the English village of Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Essex, England. (7. August 1985)

Space Shuttle Challenger lifts off for mission STS-61-A, its final successful mission. (30. October 1985)

Manchester Air Disaster sees 55 people killed when a fire breaks out on a commercial aircraft at Manchester Airport. (22. August 1985)

Pope John Paul II announces the institution of World Youth Day. (20. December 1985)
