World War II Adolf Hitler's designated successor Hermann Göring sends him a telegram asking permission to take leadership of the Third Reich, which causes Hitler to replace him with Joseph Goebbels and Karl Dönitz. (23. April 1945)

The Nazi occupation army surrenders and leaves Northern Italy after a general partisan insurrection by the Italian resistance movement; the puppet fascist regime dissolves and Benito Mussolini tries to escape. This day is taken as symbolic of the Liberation of Italy. (25. April 1945)

Operation Paperclip – United States Army Major Robert B. Staver recommends that the U.S. evacuate German scientists and engineers to help in the development of rocket technology. (22. May 1945)

World War II: The Channel Islands are liberated by the British after five years of German occupation. (9. May 1945)

World War II: Führerbunker: After learning that Soviet forces have taken Eberswalde without a fight, Adolf Hitler admits defeat in his underground bunker and states that suicide is his only recourse. (22. April 1945)

World War II: American troops capture Kassel. (4. April 1945)

The Halifax Riot starts when thousands of civilians and servicemen rampage through Halifax. (8. May 1945)

Osijek, Croatia, is liberated from fascist occupation. (14. April 1945)

Benito Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci are executed by a firing squad consisting of members of the Italian resistance movement. (28. April 1945)

The Bergen-Belsen concentration camp is liberated. (15. April 1945)

The Dachau concentration camp is liberated by United States troops. (29. April 1945)

World War II: American troops liberate Ohrdruf forced labor camp in Germany. (4. April 1945)

World War II: A German newsreader officially announces that Adolf Hitler has "fallen at his command post in the Reich Chancellery fighting to the last breath against Bolshevism and for Germany". The Soviet flag is raised over the Reich Chancellery, by order of Stalin. (1. May 1945)

Argentinian labour leader José Peter declares the Federación Obrera de la Industria de la Carne dissolved. (12. May 1945)

World War II: The US 82nd Airborne Division liberates Wöbbelin concentration camp finding 1000 dead prisoners, most of whom starved to death. (2. May 1945)
