The International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefines the term "planet" such that Pluto is now considered a dwarf planet. (24. August 2006)

The May 2006 Java earthquake strikes devastating Bantul and the city of Yogyakarta killing over 6,600 people. (27. May 2006)

At least 21 suspected terrorists were arrested in the 2006 transatlantic aircraft plot that happened in the United Kingdom. The arrests were made in London, Birmingham, and High Wycombe in an overnight operation. (9. August 2006)

Dhaka wildcat strikes: A series of massive strikes begin, involving nearly 1.8 million garment workers in Bangladesh. (20. May 2006)

The first Kazakh space satellite, KazSat is launched. (18. June 2006)

The Thai military stages a coup in Bangkok. The Constitution is revoked and martial law is declared. (19. September 2006)

Lebanon War: At least 28 civilians, including 16 children are killed by the Israeli Air Force in what Lebanese call the Second Qana massacre and what Israel considers to be an attempt to stop rockets' being fired, from Lebanon, at Israeli civilian targets. (30. July 2006)

The Nathula Pass between India and China, sealed during the Sino-Indian War, re-openes for trade after 44 years. (6. July 2006)

The Republic of Montenegro holds a referendum proposing independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. The Montenegrin people choose independence with a majority of 55%. (21. May 2006)

The post Loktantra Andolan government passes a landmark bill curtailing the power of the monarchy and making Nepal a secular country. (18. May 2006)

Natascha Kampusch, who had been abducted at the age of ten, escapes from her captor Wolfgang Priklopil, after eight years of captivity. (23. August 2006)
