Germany: Otto John, head of West Germany's secret service, defects to East Germany. (20. July 1954)

Pope Pius XII canonises Dominic Savio, who was 14 years old at the time of his death, as a saint, making him the youngest non-martyr saint in the Roman Catholic Church. (12. June 1954)

Elvis Presley makes his radio debut when WHBQ Memphis played his first recording for Sun Records, "That's All Right." (7. July 1954)
