In Texas, Charles Brooks, Jr., becomes the first person to be executed by lethal injection in the United States. (7. December 1982)

Anti-government demonstrations are held in 66 Polish cities to commemorate the second anniversary of the Gdańsk Agreement. (31. August 1982)

Scott Fahlman posts the first documented emoticons :-) and :-( on the Carnegie Mellon University Bulletin Board System. (19. September 1982)

Lech Wałęsa, the leader of Poland's outlawed Solidarity movement, is released after eleven months of internment near the Soviet border. (14. November 1982)

268 campesinos ("peasants" or "country people") are slain in the Plan de Sánchez massacre in Ríos Montt's Guatemala. (18. July 1982)

Poland bans Solidarity and all trade unions. (8. October 1982)

Pan Am Flight 759 crashes in Kenner, Louisiana killing all 145 people on board and eight others on the ground. (9. July 1982)

Hyde Park and Regents Park bombings: The Provisional IRA detonates two bombs in Hyde Park and Regents Park in central London, killing eight soldiers, wounding forty-seven people, and leading to the deaths of seven horses. (20. July 1982)

Turkish military diplomat Colonel Atilla Altıkat is shot and killed in Ottawa, Canada's capital city. Justice Commandos Against Armenian Genocide claim responsibility, saying they are avenging the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians in the 1915 Armenian Genocide. (27. August 1982)

Ray Mancini defeats Duk Koo Kim in a boxing match held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kim's subsequent death (on November 17) leads to significant changes in the sport. (13. November 1982)

Mexico announces it is unable to pay its enormous external debt, marking the beginning of a debt crisis that spreads to all of Latin America and the Third World. (12. August 1982)

Helmut Kohl replaces Helmut Schmidt as Chancellor of Germany through a Constructive Vote of No Confidence. (1. October 1982)

Chicago Tylenol murders: Johnson & Johnson initiates a nationwide product recall in the United States for all products in its Tylenol brand after several bottles in Chicago are found to have been laced with cyanide, resulting in seven deaths. (5. October 1982)

The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party wins elections, leading to the first Socialist government in Spain after death of Franco. Felipe Gonzalez becomes Prime Minister-elect. (28. October 1982)

During the UEFA Cup match between FC Spartak Moscow and HFC Haarlem, 66 people are crushed to death in the Luzhniki disaster. (20. October 1982)
