King Hussein of Jordan declares military rule following the hijacking of four civilian airliners by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). This results in the formation of the Black September Palestinian paramilitary unit. (16. September 1970)

The first Glastonbury Festival is held at Michael Eavis's farm in Glastonbury, United Kingdom. (19. September 1970)

NASA announces the cancellation of two Apollo missions to the Moon, Apollo 15 (the designation is re-used by a later mission), and Apollo 19. (2. September 1970)

The Laguna Fire starts in San Diego County, California, burning 175,425 acres (709.92 km2). (26. September 1970)

California judge Harold Haley is taken hostage in his courtroom and killed during an effort to free George Jackson from police custody. (7. August 1970)

Two passenger jets bound from Europe to New York are simultaneously hijacked by Palestinian terrorist members of the PFLP and taken to Dawson's Field in Jordan. (6. September 1970)

Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser dies of a heart attack in Cairo. Anwar Sadat is named as Nasser's temporary successor, and will later become the permanent successor. (28. September 1970)

Salvador Allende is elected President of Chile. (4. September 1970)

Kostas Georgakis, a Greek student of geology, sets himself ablaze in Matteotti Square in Genoa, Italy, as a protest against the dictatorial regime of Georgios Papadopoulos. (19. September 1970)

Venera program: Venera 7 launched. It will later become the first spacecraft to successfully transmit data from the surface of another planet (Venus). (17. August 1970)
