In Sylacauga, Alabama, United States, the Hodges Meteorite crashes through a roof and hits a woman taking an afternoon nap in the only documented case of a human being hit by a rock from space. (30. November 1954)

U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower dedicates the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima memorial) in Arlington National Cemetery. (10. November 1954)

The nationwide debut of Tonight Starring Steve Allen (The Tonight Show) hosted by Steve Allen on NBC. (27. September 1954)

Japanese rail ferry Toya Maru sinks during a typhoon in the Tsugaru Strait, Japan killing 1,172. (26. September 1954)

The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) is established. (8. September 1954)

Hurricane Hazel devastates the eastern seaboard, killing 95 and causing massive floods as far north as Toronto. As a Category 4 upon landfall, it is the strongest storm on record to strike as far north as North Carolina. (15. October 1954)

Cold War: The United States Senate votes 65 to 22 to censure Joseph McCarthy for "conduct that tends to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute". (2. December 1954)

Dwight D. Eisenhower pledges United States support to South Vietnam. (24. October 1954)

The first Godzilla film is released and marks the first appearance of the character of the same name. (3. November 1954)

Texas Instruments announces the first Transistor radio. (18. October 1954)
