Duk Koo Kim dies from injuries sustained during a 14-round match against Ray Mancini in Las Vegas, prompting reforms in the sport of boxing. (17. November 1982)

The Salang tunnel fire in Afghanistan kills up to 2,000 people. (3. November 1982)

In Texas, Charles Brooks, Jr., becomes the first person to be executed by lethal injection in the United States. (7. December 1982)

The United States Environmental Protection Agency announces it has identified dangerous levels of dioxin in the soil of Times Beach, Missouri. (23. December 1982)

The General Union of Ecuadorian Workers (UGTE) is founded. (20. November 1982)

Lech Wałęsa, the leader of Poland's outlawed Solidarity movement, is released after eleven months of internment near the Soviet border. (14. November 1982)

The People's Republic of China adopts its current constitution. (4. December 1982)

At the University of Utah, Barney Clark becomes the first person to receive a permanent artificial heart. (2. December 1982)

A soil sample is taken from Times Beach, Missouri, that will be found to contain 300 times the safe level of dioxin. (3. December 1982)

The Troubles: The Irish National Liberation Army bombed a pub frequented by British soldiers in Ballykelly, Northern Ireland. It killed eleven soldiers and six civilians. (6. December 1982)

Michael Jackson's second solo album, Thriller is released worldwide. It will become the best-selling record album in history. (30. November 1982)

Honda becomes the first Asian automobile company to produce cars in the United States with the opening of its factory in Marysville, Ohio. The Honda Accord is the first car produced there. (1. November 1982)
