The Fort Tejon earthquake strikes California, registering an estimated magnitude of 7.9. (9. January 1857)

The Mountain Meadows massacre: Mormon settlers and Paiutes massacre 120 pioneers at Mountain Meadows, Utah. (11. September 1857)

The SS Central America sinks about 160 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, drowning a total of 426 passengers and crew, including Captain William Lewis Herndon. The ship was carrying 13–15 tons of gold from the San Francisco Gold Rush. (12. September 1857)

Second Opium War: France and the United Kingdom declare war on China. (3. March 1857)

Elisha Otis's first elevator is installed at 488 Broadway New York City. (23. March 1857)

The British East India Company disbands the 34th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry whose sepoy Mangal Pandey had earlier revolted against the British and is considered to be the First Martyr in the War of Indian Independence. (6. May 1857)

The Russian warship Lefort capsizes and sinks during a storm in the Gulf of Finland, killing all 826 aboard. (22. September 1857)

Indian Rebellion of 1857: In India, the first war of Independence begins. Sepoys mutiny against their commanding officers at Meerut. (10. May 1857)

Sheffield F.C., the world's oldest association football club still in operation, is founded in Sheffield, England. (24. October 1857)

Sophia of Nassau marries the future King Oscar II of Sweden–Norway. (6. June 1857)

Second relief of Lucknow – twenty-four Victoria Crosses are awarded, the most in a single day. (16. November 1857)
