While Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia visits Brazil, his Imperial Bodyguard seizes the capital and proclaims him deposed and his son, Crown Prince Asfa Wossen, Emperor. (13. December 1960)

Troops loyal to Haile Selassie I in Ethiopia crush the coup that began December 13, returning power to their leader upon his return from Brazil. Haile Selassie absolves his son of any guilt. (17. December 1960)

1960 Munich Convair 340 crash: 20 passengers and crew on board as well as 32 people on the ground are killed. (17. December 1960)

The Sudanese Republic is renamed Mali after the withdrawal of Senegal from the Mali Federation. (22. September 1960)

Eastern Air Lines Flight 375, a Lockheed L-188 Electra, crashes after a bird strike on takeoff from Boston's Logan International Airport, killing 62 of 72 on board. (4. October 1960)
